Hi, my name is Jon Nixey, and I hope you enjoy your visit to this Albray family website. I'm interested specifically in the Albray surname becausee it's my wife's maiden name. This particular spelling is just one of countless variant spellings of the surname Allberry. You only have to look at the surname index page to see just how many ways it can be spelled, and that list is by no means complete. In my wife's direct line, the earliest record of it being spelled as Albray was in 1865, but prior to that there was a double-l variation used on the 1851 census. The handful of Albray families in the UK today are descendants of the Alberry family in West Sussex. So far, the furthest back I have been able to trace is John Alberry who was my wife's great great great great great grandfather. I have been unable to find out who his wife was or when they married, but they baptised at least the following children at Trotton: Ann Alberry, DECember 26, 1736, John Alberry, JUNe 24, 1739, Mary Alberry, APRil 11, 1742, Jane Alberry, FEBruary 21, 1747, Richard Alberry, JANuary 13, 1750, Elizabeth Alberry, APRil 15, 1753, and James Alberry, June 1, 1755 (my wife's great great great great grandfather). James Alberry and Sarah Rudman were married on January 5, 1781 at Trotton, in the presence of Thomas (surname illegible) and Robert Knight. They baptised the following children there: James Alberry, February 24, 1781 (my wife's great great great grandfather), Mary Alberry, May 17, 1783, Sarah Albury, March 4, 1785, John Alberry, June 22, 1788, Thomas Alberry, January 13, 1793, Elizabeth Alberry, October 5, 1794, and William Alberry, July 30, 1797. James Albury and Rhoda Luckins were married after Banns on November 6, 1804 at Rogate, in the presence of Henry Jupp and Nanny Collins. They baptised 14 children there between 1806 and 1829: James Aubrey, October 19, 1806, John Albury, april 24, 1808, Rose Alsbury, March 18, 1810, Mary Ann Aldbury, December 22, 1811, Thomas Aubury, February 24, 1813, Elizabeth Aubury, September 20, 1814, George Albury, August 17, 1817 (my wife's great great grandfather), Robert Albury, October 27, 1820, Richard Albury, January 27, 1822, Harriet Albury, January 4, 1824, Henry Albery, May 22, 1825 (buried October 26, 1825), Samuel Albury, May 5, 1826 (buried May 8, 1826), and Jane Albury, October 11, 1829. James had died several years before the census taken in 1841. He was buried on December 13, 1832 at Rogate, and was 51 years of age. Details from the 1841 Census: Address - Rogate village, Sussex.
